Urban Trekking: I luoghi delle Donne e la Resistenza - Italy
On May 7th 2024, the WORTH project, in collaboration with the Technical Commercial Institute Rosa Luxemburg, we hosted a captivating activity: an urban trekking route through Bologna to uncover the legacy of courage. Titled "WORTH - Women in Resistance in the 20th Century," we delved into the stories of bravery and defiance that shaped our history.
Our journey aimed to understand the role of intolerance and discrimination in the past century in the city, as well as the community's response to these challenges. To achieve this, we made three stops at emblematic monuments, each with its own significant story.
The activity seamlessly integrated non-formal education and gamification as learning tools.
Our first stop was at the Monument Ossario ai Caduti Partigiani, conceived with the intention of symbolizing the rebirth of the partisans who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. This monument features five hundred niches with the names of partisans and the phrase "freely ascends to the sky of glory," engraved on its outer perimeter.
Next, we headed to Vía Irma Bandiera, where we learned about the story of Irma, a courageous woman born in Bologna in 1915. Irma joined the Communist Party and later the Resistance movement, where she endured torture without ever speaking, thus preserving the safety of her comrades. Recognized as a partisan at the end of the war, she was awarded the Gold Medal for Military Valor.
Finally, we visited the Memoriale alle Donne Cadute per la Resistenza, dedicated to the 128 female partisans from the province of Bologna who died fighting for liberation. Built in 1975, this monument features 128 bricks, each bearing the name of a fallen partisan.
During our visit, we had the honor of hearing the story of Adelia Casari, known as 'Emma', shared by Mariarosa Panacaldi. Emma, from an anti-fascist family, joined the resistance with her brothers and later fought for labor rights in Bologna. She contributed to the creation of the Villa Spada monument in honor of the Bolognese fallen during the war, with the aim of engaging young people in collective memory.
After this enriching experience, our urban journey concluded.
